Drug Addicted Mother Gives Birth In Motel And Chews Through Umbilical Cord

A premature baby born Friday night in a motel bathtub after his mother said she went on a crack cocaine binge remains in critical condition on a ventilator at UF Heatlh Shands Hospital in Gainesville.

The Florida Department of Children and Families has taken custody of the baby and his 11-month-old brother, DCF spokeswoman Kristi Gray said. The baby’s brother has been placed in foster care.

Their 37-year-old mother, Chrystal A. Hassell, is on suicide watch at the Marion County Jail, meaning she is under constant supervision. She faces a charge of child neglect. She will be evaluated by medical professionals and will get whatever assistance she needs, Gray said, and the agency will work with her.

On Saturday, hours after her arrest, Hassell said she has been using drugs since she was a teenager, including while pregnant. She said she has a 16-year-old daughter who was born addicted to drugs. She said she did not know she was pregnant with her third child until early March when she felt movement in her stomach. She went to Munroe Regional Medical Center for a checkup and was told she was approximately six to seven months pregnant.

Hassell said she decided not to smoke crack but the cravings were too great. The day before her baby was born, she went on a binge. She said she had the child in a bathtub at Vacation Host Inn on South Pine Avenue and cut the umbilical cord with her teeth. She said the baby began turning blue so she called 911.

Vincent Terry, 43, the father of the baby and his brother, is at the Marion County Jail on a warrant out of El Pasco County, Colo., for domestic violence, attempted murder and a violation of probation on possession of a Schedule II controlled substance.

Terry said Tuesday during an interview at the jail that he did not know his girlfriend was abusing drugs for 24 hours before their baby was born. He said she told him she was tired and wanted to lie down.

“I knew she had a history of doing drugs, but not that she was doing drugs. She just found out she was pregnant,” he said.

Terry said he and Hassell attended a court hearing Tuesday to determine the status of their two children. He said his family provided the names of immediate family members whom the children can stay with and that DCF officials plan to do background checks to see if they qualify to take care of them.

These two got a lot of nerve to think that they deserve visitation rights to these kids. A pack of wild dogs could probably raise them better than Chrystal and Vincent!

After completing individual tours recently, New York Daily News’ Page Six reports that sources have informed them that the Carters are planning on a 20 stadium tour this June.

Interestingly enough, the tour would debut a year after Jay Z denied ever doing a Best Of Both Worlds project with Beyonce during an interview with Angie Martinez on Hot 97. When asked about the possibility, Jay flatly answered “No way. You saw how that one ended.”

(Street Life City News) In December of 2013, Gucci Mane (born Radric Davis) was charged with two counts of possessing a firearm as a felon. If convicted, the Atlanta rapper could face up to 20 years behind bars. According to Radar Online, Gucci is looking to avoid a trial by negotiating a plea deal with the government.

Radar obtained court documents that show Gucci’s lawyers have asked the judge in the case to postpone the scheduled court date because “all parties anticipate resolution without the need of a trial.”

The docs also read:

The parties believe they may have resolved this matter subject to certain approvals including a meeting with the Court. However, due to various schedule conflicts, counsel have been unable to finalize the matter and given defense counsels respective absence from the jurisdiction over the next week, will be unable to finalize the matter prior to the trial date.

Gucci was arrested last September after two separate incidents involving firearms. He allegedly threatened friends and police officers with a gun.

Report: Low-Income Black Students Three Times More Likely To Receive Inexperienced Teachers

The Center for American Progress issued a report on Friday that confirms that low-income students of color not only have less experienced teachers, but also less effective teachers.

The study analyzes teacher evaluation scores in low-income and affluent districts in both Massachusetts and Louisiana.

In Louisiana, a student within a school at the highest-poverty quartile is almost three times as likely to be taught by a teacher rated “ineffective” as a student in a school in the lowest-poverty quartile. And in Massachusetts, students in high-poverty schools are three times as likely to be taught by a teacher rated “unsatisfactory” than students in low-poverty schools.

A second report indicates the root cause is an unequal distribution of teachers. While No Child Left Behind previously asked states to devise plans to ensure equitable distribution, subsequent waivers gave states the flexibility to deviate from those requirements.

“Poor students and students of color are less likely to get well-qualified or high-achieving teachers than students from higher-income families or students who are white,” says the report.

This definitely has to end. All students should have an equal opportunity to receive a quality education.

Hammer filed for bankruptcy in 1996, and it seemed the Oakland native’s problems with the IRS were settled in 2007 when he paid off a $1.4 million debt to the government. But reports began to circulate in late 2013 that Hammer still owed $798,033 in back taxes, and TMZ is now reporting Uncle Sam is still looking for even more funds from Hammer.

According to the site, the IRS is seeking $1.4 million from Hammer for penalties and interest on the ’96 tax delinquency. Hammer has apparently filed legal documents asking a judge to block the IRS’ attempt to collect the money.
